Procedure

Sleeve Plus (advanced metabolic sleeve)

Sleeve Plus refers to a sleeve gastrectomy performed together with an additional metabolic step — for example, a bipartition or duodenal-ileal component — to strengthen metabolic effects, particularly for patients with type 2 diabetes or higher BMI.

How it works

  • Sleeve gastrectomy is performed as the primary component.
  • A secondary step (varies by technique) modifies intestinal routing to enhance metabolic effect.
  • Nutritional monitoring is more intensive than sleeve alone.

Risks and considerations

  • Same categories of risk as sleeve gastrectomy
  • Additional risks related to the intestinal component
  • Higher likelihood of nutritional deficiencies than sleeve alone

Follow-up

Close nutritional monitoring for the first years and lifelong follow-up.

May be discussed for

  • Adults with higher BMI or difficult-to-control type 2 diabetes for whom sleeve alone may be insufficient

When it may not be appropriate

Patients who prefer minimal anatomic changes or cannot commit to structured nutritional follow-up.
