ESG vs. surgical sleeve gastrectomy
These are different procedures at different levels of invasiveness. Neither is inherently 'better' — the appropriate option depends on medical history, goals, and preferences.
Invasiveness
ESG is performed endoscopically through the mouth with no external incisions. Sleeve gastrectomy is laparoscopic surgery in which part of the stomach is removed.
Weight-loss magnitude
Published cohorts generally report greater average weight loss with surgical sleeve gastrectomy than with ESG.
Recovery
ESG typically involves a shorter recovery. Surgical sleeve requires a hospital stay and longer convalescence.
Reversibility
ESG does not remove stomach tissue and is more anatomically conservative. Sleeve gastrectomy is not reversible.
